Skyline Drive is a 105-mile road that runs the entire length of the National Park Service's Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
The views here would be wonderful on any day and the mood of the weather would only add to the experience (except if the weather gets too bad, the road closes down). This area is exceedingly beautiful, the mountains having a special quality and look

Depending on the point of view when looking at the dizzying combination of lines in these bridge cables, there is an amazing variety of shapes and repetitive patterns. The upward swing to the lines and angular strength of the towers leads to the softness of the clouds. There is a geometric abstract feel and the soft blue color of the cables are so beautiful against against the blue of the sky.

The wonderful and surprising colors of the grass reeds are a beautiful background for this tall, beautifully detailed grass plume which has its own array of interesting color.

A stand of cattails breaks the endless whiteness of a late winter snowfall.

Rain-drenched pumpkins look especially alluring on the display table. The "Open" sign at a rural farm stand invites those passing by to stop for their annual fill of pumpkin orange. A light painterly effect applied in post processing adds texture and enhances the dreamy, liquid atmosphere.

Mixed Light Series -
Street lights begin to glow as evening approaches on a stormy day. The dramatic sky is filled with interestingly toned clouds with hints of purple among the blues and grays. A beautiful blue sky lingers behind the cover of clouds.

My own image of a row of cattails in a field of snow is the inspiration for this abstract creation of this mandala image. This is one of a series of mandalas using nature-sourced images.

I was passing by this birch tree in a dreary parking lot one blustery pre-spring day and was taken by the leaves which had hung on from the previous autumn (marcescense) through the frozen winter giving us a reminder of the past and a nod to the passage that was soon to come. The vigorous wind-blown movement of the leaves gave a breath of life to the otherwise grey surroundings. The dance of these birch trees became a sweet memory.

Out looking for signs of Spring but it was still too cold and this was as close as I could find. Spring was getting a slow start. Soon it will look like a jungle where all was bare.

This stand of trees create such a lovely arch shape with its perimeter. There is an interesting symmetry in this grouping as well.
I never tire of the wonderful shapes that can be found in tree branches. The delicate silhouetted filigree branch shapes are beautifully showcased against a most refreshing deep blue sky with bountiful fluffy white clouds. I look at that sky and just drift away with it.

Wandering the back roads of Steuben County, Howard, NY I was greeted by visions of cornfields like this one. A glorious day with wind in the corn and puffy white clouds above.

The wonderful sight of newly harvested hay formed into round hay bales are dotting a mid-summer farm field. Small islands of grasses remain while the rest of the field is textured with scraps of the cut hay.

A lone runner stands out wearing a red jacket while jogging on a country road during a March snowstorm. The trees and fences have a ghostly appearance during this whiteout leaving only the runner and the road in clear sight.

As if brushed on by hand, delicate strokes of pink and red embellish the butter-yellow petals with unique patterns and soft textures. Sunlight highlights the overlapping petals creating additional interest for this beguiling flower.

The deep color of the Crabapple buds are a hint of the fruit to follow later in the season while the delicate white flowers bring the freshness and delight of Springtime. These wonderful trees are pure delight.

Campanula, Bellflower Buds.
How stunning a simple plant can be. It is such a treat to watch these lovely blue or blue-purple flowers as they do a spiral unwind of their buds before they bloom.

Beside the fact that I can hardly pass up light poles or power lines and poles and towers, I have an affinity for the time of day when there is still some daylight as the electric lights go on. The color of the electric lights have a special presence that passes when night comes on.

White tree blossoms, highlighted by the sun, display their delicate details and announce the arrival of Springtime.

Magnificent, exciting Lenticular Clouds, also known as Altocumulus Standing Lenticular (ACSL) Clouds, are a mind-tingling sight.
They get their name due to the lens-shape they acquire from their stacking behavior. They most often form where stable moist air flows over mountainous areas. Large-scale standing waves form on the downwind side of the mountain.

November branches - when bare branches indicate a time of veiled dormancy rather than a renewal. For a brief time, it is difficult to tell them apart.

I love what the Linden does. I was glad to be able to spend some time with this one. Besides the engaging shapes of the leaves, it has soft and playful self-decorated do-dads (bracts and berries/seeds) with a touch of color that just makes me love it at this time in its cycle (July). The shape is so lovely too. It is one of those things of which I never tire.

The leaves of the Rhododendron are not showy and a bit leathery but when sunlight graces its details, a different sight is revealed.

Late afternoon play of light and shadow on a white curtain accentuates this interesting collection of overlapping curves.

Lyman Conservatory of the Smith College Gardens -
Conservatory detail:
The textures, shapes, lines and muted whitewash coloring of this conservatory invite the viewer to linger in order to take in the details of the beautifully interesting structure. There are so many shapes, patterns and angles to explore. The whitewashed dribbles on the windows lend an air of mystery as to what lies beyond the grid of windows. The age is showing in its weathered appearancek showing uneven structural lines, rust and peeling paint.

Hands on Music series | It is always an uplifting experience to see the beautiful variety of hands playing on drums. Even better to be there in person.

Smith College Conservatory detail:
A greenhouse conservatory is always a sight to behold. There are so many shapes and angles to explore. The whitewashed dribbles on the windows lend an air of mystery as to what lies beyond the grid of windows. An overcast sky creates a diffused, even light that highlights the texture on the glass surfaces and the intricate details of the metal crestwork.

Roadside plants series:
A lovely roadside find, small and inconspicuously blending in with roadside field growth.
When ripe, the brown seed pods extend outward from the stalk and look like a bird's foot.

Hands on Music series:
Beautiful colors of a purple floral garment offset the neutral beige tones of a large frame drum and the delicately lighted hand of a musician playing the drum. One can feel the touch of the hand, firm enough to awaken the sound of the drum and gentle enough to allow and appreciate the voice of the instrument.

Passing this stretch of woods that runs along the Hudson River in New York State, you can see the aftermath of hurricane Irene from 2011 and most likely additional trauma from hurricane Sandy in 2013. The chaotic intersections of the fallen trees create a strong visual dynamic, outlined here by the incessant snows of 2014-15.

This little tree captivated me during a blustery rainstorm and provided me with a good number of images that continue to hold my attention. This second go around of exploring these takes expresses more of the stormy greyness of the day with less color saturation.

A close look of a sunflower reveals wonderful shapes and patterns, beautiful details in the petals and the fascinating complexity of the sunflower's center. I love how this type of sunflower has multiple inner rings in varying colors.
If you look closely in the shadow area, you will see the ghostly shaded lighter inner ring of the neighboring sunflower.
